How to install a WordPress theme from a ZIP file

If your ZIP already contains a WordPress theme, open Appearance, then Themes, select Add New Theme and Upload Theme, choose the ZIP and select Install Now. Preview the result before activating it. If the ZIP contains a Vite or React website instead, it needs conversion first. These are two different kinds of upload.

1. Check what your ZIP contains

A WordPress theme package contains theme files recognised by WordPress, including a style.css file with theme information. A repository download or a finished web build is not automatically a WordPress theme, even if it contains HTML, CSS and images.

A Vite project may include package.json, source folders and configuration files. That is raw source. A finished build contains the generated website files, often in a dist folder. Esipher accepts finished Vite and React builds as ZIP files; raw source must be built first.

2. Back up and use a test copy where possible

Before changing an existing site, make a current backup of its files and database using your host or backup tool. If your host offers a test copy of the site, try the theme there first. Download themes and plugins only from sources you trust.

Sign in with an account allowed to install themes. A managed host, a WordPress.com plan or a multisite administrator may restrict installation. If Upload Theme is unavailable, check those permissions and hosting restrictions before troubleshooting the file itself.

3. Upload an existing WordPress theme ZIP

In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance, then Themes. Select Add New Theme, or Add New depending on your version, and then Upload Theme. Choose the installable theme ZIP from your computer and select Install Now.

Upload the ZIP rather than its extracted folder. Some purchased theme downloads are larger bundles containing documentation and other files. If that is what you downloaded, extract the outer bundle on your computer and find the actual installable theme ZIP inside it.

When installation succeeds, review the preview options available for the theme. Activate only when you are ready to make it the current design. Installing a theme and activating it are separate actions.

4. Convert a finished website build with Esipher instead

If your ZIP contains a finished Vite or React website rather than a WordPress theme, do not upload it through Appearance, Themes. Install Esipher from its official WordPress Plugin Directory listing, activate the plugin and open its Convert screen.

Select the ZIP containing your finished build and follow the conversion controls in your installed release. Esipher extracts the build, rewrites asset paths and generates an activatable WordPress theme on your own server. Review its output and any reported limitations before activating the generated theme.

For sites with multiple pages, headings, paragraphs and images can become native editable WordPress blocks. Custom component layouts are not yet individually editable. A successful conversion does not mean every feature in the original project has been recreated.

5. Check the result before sharing your website

Review more than the homepage. Open each important page directly, test the navigation and check images, fonts and links. Look at the site on a phone as well as a larger screen.

If your original design had forms, login screens, payments or live data, check how those functions will be supplied on WordPress. Esipher does not convert backend authentication, database operations or live data. A form that looks right is not evidence that it sends a message.

  • Authentication, database operations and live data do not convert. Esipher detects and reports them.
  • Client routing beyond what exists in the built HTML does not convert.
  • Custom component layouts are not yet split into individually editable blocks.
  • Builder specific adapters and a conversion history or rollback screen are still to come.

Common WordPress theme ZIP problems

The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet

First check whether you uploaded a WordPress theme at all. The file may be a raw project, an unconverted web build or an outer download bundle. Use the actual installable theme package, or convert a supported finished build with Esipher. Adding an empty stylesheet does not turn a React project into a working WordPress theme.

The ZIP exceeds the upload limit

Your host controls upload limits and related server settings. Check the limit shown in WordPress and ask your host about the supported upload method or increasing the limit. Do not remove required images or scripts just to make the file smaller.

The homepage works but other pages do not

Check whether those pages actually exist in the exported HTML. Esipher does not convert client routing beyond the built HTML. A browser route in the original app is not automatically a separate exported page.

Do I need GitHub to convert a ZIP?

No. ZIP conversion and Connected Projects are different workflows. GitHub is optional for Connected Projects. Each push triggers a build, and an administrator must select Apply update before an update installs or activates.
